Deuteronomy 34:1-8
There is a story about a young man
who asked his rich father to give him
his inheritance early, much like
the prodigal son in the Bible story.
The father left the room and returned shortly
with a Bible. He said he would give
the son this large sum of money if
he would first read the entire Bible.
I read once that it actually only takes
about 72 hours of reading, so it could
easily have been done in a few months if the
son had spent even a little time each day at it.
A couple of months later, the son returned
with the Bible and told his father he
had read the entire book and would
like his money now. The father said
he didn't believe the son and
would not give him the money.
The son objected, but the man took the
Bible and from between the pages of
the Book of Revelation, he pulled out
a check he had written to the son
for the entire inheritance! If the
son had read all the Bible like he
said, he would have found the check.
Moses only got to look into the Promise
Land from the top of a mountain.
He did not get to enter the land
because of his earlier disobedience.
He had led the Israelites for 40 years
to finally be ready to take possession
of their new home, but he himself had
stopped short through disobedience.
Like the young man in the story who
stopped short of reading the Bible - how sad!
Prayer: Dear Lord, forgive us when we stop short
of Your will and Your work. We realize that
means we've stopped short of Your blessings, too.
Help us do better. Help us remain faithful.
P.S. There is a monument near the top
of Mount Washington to Lizzie Bourne.
She died there at the age of 23
trying to reach the Tip-top House
at the top of the mountain.
That night she and her companions
stopped short during a storm only
a few hundred yards from safety.
She died there due to exposure.
Don't stop! Keep going!
